Lyerly Project Kickoff: 50 Goats, 40 Acres, and a Quail Mindset

Lyerly Project Kickoff: 50 Goats, 40 Acres, and a Quail Mindset

Our goats are officially off to work in Lyerly, Georgia on a new vegetation management and habitat restoration project—and we’re fired up to help this landowner keep pushing his vision on one of the coolest quail properties we’ve seen.

After a long haul and a quick treat, 50 goats hit the ground and went straight to work on a 40-acre section of clearcut. The views aren’t bad either. Over the coming seasons, we’ll be sharing updates as this thicket turns into functional, healthy ground again.

Why Goats for Habitat Restoration?

Goats are built for brush. Managed correctly, they:

  • Reduce invasives while protecting soil structure
  • Open travel corridors and edge habitat for wildlife
  • Jumpstart native grasses and forbs by knocking back woody competition
  • Lower fuel loads and maintenance costs without heavy equipment or herbicides

What We’re Doing on This Property

  • Target area: 40-acre clearcut section in Lyerly, GA
  • Stock: 50 goats, rotationally grazed with clean sets and frequent moves
  • Goal: Improve quail habitat by reducing brush pressure, opening understory, and promoting diverse ground cover
  • Approach: Low-stress, high-control grazing with careful timing, density, and rest periods

What Success Looks Like

  • Less woody pressure and fewer invasive patches
  • Opening the canopy to encourage more forbs and grasses
  • Clearer travel lanes for wildlife
  • A property that’s easier (and cheaper) to maintain season after season
